A Gift of Love, Life, and Legacy

"Let God and the world know you are grateful. That the gift has been given."

– Poem by Mary Oliver

It is with deep reverence and heartfelt love that we remember Mrs. Sallie Mae Russell Werthing as a cherished gift to us all. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother; and a beacon of faith who graced the lives of everyone she met. Her unwavering commitment to her family, her church, her community and her students was a testament to the boundless love and grace that guided her every step.

A soul as beautiful as hers touched many lives, and on Friday, August 23, 2024, she peacefully departed this earth, surrounded by her loving family to join her heavenly Father and devoted husband. Today, we come together to celebrate her life and honor the love and legacy she leaves behind—a legacy that will forever be treasured in our hearts.

 A Dear Gift

"The moment we begin to embrace the woman God created us to be, is the moment we will begin to discover unshakeable joy in our lives."

—Author Unknown

Mrs. Werthing was a woman of incredible strength, wisdom, and grace. She was a pillar in her home, a guiding light in her church, and a trusted friend and mentor to many. Her influence extended far beyond her immediate family, touching the lives of those in her community, her educational and social organizations and even those she met in passing.

She was devout in her faith, committed to her family and loyal in her friendships. Her dedication to community service, her visionary approach to education and her graciousness in all interactions made her a woman admired and respected by all who knew her. Mrs. Werthing was a lifelong learner, always curious about the world around her, and adventurous in her pursuits—qualities that made her a cherished companion and a revered leader.

A Treasured Gift

"Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies."

—Proverbs 31:10

Mrs. Werthing was multifaceted in her personality and passions. As an educator, she was dedicated to nurturing the minds and hearts of her students, instilling in them the values of hard work, curiosity and kindness. Her love for music, sports and the arts brought joy to her life and those around her. Whether she was singing her favorite gospel songs, cheering on her children and grandchildren at their sporting events, or enjoying a walk with her beloved husband, she embraced every moment with enthusiasm and gratitude.

Her knowledge of scripture, science and English made her a sought-after speaker and a beloved mentor. She was a woman who believed in sharing her wisdom and encouraging others to pursue their dreams. Mrs. Werthing’s life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and education—values that she passed on to her children, grandchildren and the countless students she taught throughout her career.

A Precious Gift

"You were a precious gift, Our joy, Our dreams. You were a sparkle through the darkness; Our hope for a brighter tomorrow."

—Author Unknown

Born in 1931 to Frank and Louise Cole Russell, Sallie was a gift to her family and community from the very beginning. Raised by her grandmother, Mrs. Lessie Crymes Cole, she grew up with a deep love for God and a strong sense of service. She was the older sister of Virginia Cooperwood and Dr. Ernest Russell, who both preceded her in death, and Frank Russell, Jr. She was a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church for 88 years, where she served in numerous roles, including the Mother’s Board, Naomi Circle, Sunday School and Bible Study.

A Committed Gift

"And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?"

—Esther 4:14

Mrs. Werthing's life was shaped by the times she lived in, yet she rose above challenges with grace and determination. She witnessed the changes in education during the desegregation movement and played a role in shaping the future of those who came after her. A proud graduate of Merry High School and Lane College, she went on to earn her M.A. from Indiana University and pursued further studies at Peabody College.

A Cherished Gift

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” – Ephesians 5:25

Mrs. Werthing was blessed with a beautiful marriage to Mr. John Austin Werthing, Sr. They shared 68 years of love, partnership, and devotion. Together, they raised three wonderful children, Mavis Yvonne Lloyd, John Austin Werthing, Jr., and Gloria Werthing Reynolds, and created a legacy of love that continues through their family. They renewed their wedding vows four times at 25, 40, 50 and 65 years. Reflecting on their enduring marriage, John shared a piece of advice: “Whenever he and Sallie had a disagreement, one of you should step out the front door and then come back in through the back door.” It is a simple approach that served them well over the years.

Her beloved John or as she called him “Werthing” preceded her in death. John and Sallie Werthing first met in a chemistry class at Lane College in 1950. “He was a bit more knowledgeable than I was, so I would pull up a chair to learn from him,” Sallie fondly recalls. Their shared "chemistry" blossomed into a relationship that spanned 71 years.

Mrs. Werthing’s love for Lane College was evident in her lifelong involvement with the institution. As a proud alumna, she served in various leadership roles within the Alumni Association and was honored to receive her 70-year diploma in 2022. The legacy she and her husband created through their scholarship fund continues to provide opportunities for students to pursue their dreams.

Education has always been a cornerstone of our family, a value deeply instilled by our parents. In honor of this commitment, they established the Professor John and Mrs. Sallie Werthing Education Scholarship Fund and The Werthing Foundation. These initiatives support students attending Lane College, their cherished alma mater, and other Historically Black Institutions. By helping students who might not otherwise have the financial means to pursue higher education, the Werthing legacy continues to thrive, touching the lives of the school community, friends and family—a true and lasting gift.

A Devoted Gift

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths."

—Proverbs 3:5-6

Mrs. Werthing's impact as an educator was profound. She taught with passion and purpose, touching the lives of countless students who have gone on to make their mark in the world. Her influence extended far and wide, and her legacy of love, faith, and education will continue to inspire future generations.
