Life and Legacy
On July 20, 1958, God gave Joe and Beverly Brown a beautiful baby girl they named Elease ElizabethBrown. She was the first of their four girls. The eldest and the smallest! She was a gift sent fromour Father in Heaven. In the afternoon of August 25, 2024, God sent his angels to escort his daughter to her Heavenly Home.
She professed her hope in Christ at an early age at New Greater Bethel AME Church. Her Christian journey led her to join other congregations, ending at Mt. Moriah M. B. Church.
She matriculated through the Jackson City School System, attending Parkview Elementary, Jackson Jr. High School, and finally graduating from Jackson Central-Merry (JCM) High School, Class of 1977. She graduated from Lane College and served as a substitute teacher in the Jackson-Madison County School System for many years.
She was well-known and loved by many throughout the Jackson community. “Lil Cookie or Ms. Cookie”, as she was affectionately known, lived life on her terms. She unapologetically did what she wanted, when she wanted, and went where she wanted.
Cookie was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Lee and Beverly Brown; her maternal grandparents Dora Dismuke and Robert Lee Blackwell; her paternal grandparents, Joe Law and Mattie Brown; two sisters, Ilene Duncan and Donna Wilson; and three nephews, Raphael “Telly” Blackwell, Raphael “Duece” Blackwell, II and Master “Andre” Anderson. She leaves to forever cherish her memories: one brother, Jerry Brown, St. Louis, MO; five sisters, Joann Duncan, Barbara Duncan, both of St. Louis, MO; Paulette Cross, Doris Anderson and Patrice (Michael) Anderson, all of Jackson, TN; She also leaves one uncle, Efrem Blackwell, Jackson, TN; five nieces, Shavoris Cross, Reshunda Wilson, Sherrell (James) Adams, and Mayana Anderson, all of Jackson, TN and Erica (Larry) King, Memphis, TN; and three nephews, Erikk (Kenya) Wilson, Jerry Anderson and Christian Anderson, all of Jackson, TN; several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, church family and numerous close friends.
